Workshop with drum music by Tadhi Alawi
In the CHUMA CHUMA workshop, different dance styles are combined with the aim of finding one’s own language of movement. Traditional Tanzanian dances merge with the movements of the participants to create an individual style.
Dance moves are repeated and new ones are discovered. Chuma’ means „iron“ or „picking“ in Swahili. Both words describe the metaphor of the course: By breaking through our movement boundaries we seek flexibility and find the ability to take movements and transform them.
Bodies explore movement and make choices. Different movements are combined and related; they are shaped, played with, merged and lead the bodies into new movements.
The class uses the reflective technique of checking in and out. This works as a ritual and as a narrative about the dance scene in Tanzania. At the same time, an exchange of stories about traditional movements will be part of the class in order to find an individual dance identity. Questions and answers will be part of the class, especially at the end of the class.
