Kuyum Dance Platform 2023
Five-day dance festival from 06th to 10th of September 2023 at the Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte.
The festival is dedicated to the performance and promotion of neo-African choreography by artists of African descent within and outside Germany. Artists of non-African descent who integrate neo-African dance practices into their work are also invited. Neo-African dance is a form of contemporary dance that draws on techniques, aesthetic principles and choreographic elements found in the movement language of dancers of African descent and incorporates them into their choreographies.
The aim of the festival is to offer these artists a platform on which they can present their neo-African dance works to a broad audience, free of attributions and clichés attributed to them. In addition, they are given the opportunity to network with each other, to exchange artistic ideas and to establish collaborations. The Kuyum Dance Platform can act as a catalyst for a new perception of African dance forms in the diaspora.
The festival takes place on an open-air stage and in two accessible indoor theatre spaces. It offers dance performances as well as workshops, including an accessible one aimed at young people, and a conference on neo-African dance led by Nora Amin.
