Ahmed Soura’s solo dance piece “Spot on Me, I Can’t Breathe” addresses the ways in which ongoing histories of trauma and liberation are inscribed in the movements of the Black body. The piece traces the global traces of traditional African dances and their transformation into hip-hop moves, for example, and approaches the struggle of Black people and the Black Lives Matter movement through body memory. The two performances of the evening deal with ways to confuse the “white” gaze.
