Grasp

Grasp = understand. To understand what has happened and to understand what is happening in the present….

Before becoming a French colony, Togo was a German protectorate for many years (1884 to 1918), after bitter negotiations between Gustav Nachtigal and King Mlapa III of Togoville at the end of the 19th century at the request of Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck

All these passages of the settlers have a great influence on our way of life. “How do these “subjects”, still locked up in museums, in the footsteps of torpedoed and uprooted bodies and tons of chains, still present in our memory, speak to our humanity? Be-Greifen (Understanding), how will we welcome them back to their original land and how will we rewrite history together? Be-grasping (understanding) the return of the living, the subjects, the deities. The liberation of our ancestors in the museums through the inhabited bodies, in trance, dancing, telling and healing our memories.

In the ARVO PÄRT song Spiegel im Spiegel, Kossi draws inspiration from the works in the museums of Bremen and Berlin that come from Africa. Kossi Sebastien Aholou-Wokawui poeticized her memories by dancing, celebrating, fighting with his body in a wooden room in Bremen….
